Founding Engineer
Engineering · Full-time · Remote
About the role
Apex Byte Tech builds and ships consumer mobile apps designed for scale and virality. We launched our first app in December 2024—5,000+ users in under two months—and we're releasing our second product imminently. We're a small, technical team focused on rapid iteration, clean architecture, and growth through paid and organic channels.
You'll be a core engineer responsible for building, shipping, and optimizing iOS features across multiple apps. This isn't a "move tickets around" role. You'll own significant parts of the mobile codebase, make technical decisions that impact millions of users, and work directly with the Head of Engineering to architect systems that support aggressive growth. We need someone who can move fast without accumulating technical debt, understands mobile-first product constraints, and has strong opinions about what makes apps feel polished vs. half-baked.
What you'll do
- Build production features in React Native + Expo, with an emphasis on performance, stability, and native iOS behavior
- Implement and iterate on monetization infrastructure using Superwall and RevenueCat (paywalls, subscription flows, A/B tests, conversion funnels)
- Manage the full release cycle: TestFlight builds, App Store submissions, version management, crash triage, hotfix deployments
- Integrate and maintain Firebase and Supabase for authentication, real-time data sync, cloud functions, and backend orchestration
- Instrument analytics and events to measure feature performance, user behavior, and funnel drop-off
- Debug production issues using Sentry, logs, and performance profiling tools
- Collaborate with a 4-person engineering team to ship features that directly impact growth metrics
- Use AI coding tools intelligently to accelerate development while maintaining code quality standards
Technical Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
- React Native experience: You've shipped production apps to the App Store, not just prototypes
- Firebase & Supabase proficiency: You understand auth flows, real-time databases, cloud functions, and when to use each platform
- iOS fundamentals: You know how to debug native modules, handle build configurations, interpret Xcode errors, and optimize for iOS-specific constraints
- Monetization SDKs: Experience with Superwall, RevenueCat, or similar paywall/subscription platforms—you've built flows that convert
- Expo ecosystem: Comfortable with EAS Build, OTA updates, custom dev clients, and native module integration when needed
- Tooling proficiency: Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, Sentry crash reporting, basic FastAPI integration patterns
What We're Looking For (Beyond the Stack)
- Shipping velocity: You don't get stuck in analysis paralysis. You make pragmatic tradeoffs to deliver value quickly.
- Product intuition: You understand what makes consumer apps feel responsive, intuitive, and worth keeping installed.
- Technical ownership: You document decisions, write maintainable code, and think about how features will scale.
- Self-direction: We don't micromanage. You'll get context and goals, then figure out how to execute.
Bonus (Not Required, But Valuable)
- Experience with UGC apps, photo editing tools, or creative consumer products
- Familiarity with growth analytics platforms (Amplitude, Mixpanel)
- Prior work at early-stage startups or on small, high-output teams
- Native iOS development experience (Swift/Objective-C)
What "Founding Engineer" Means Here
- Equity stake in a growing company
- Direct influence on technical architecture and product direction
- Early opportunity to step into leadership as the team scales
- You're building the foundation for multiple apps, not maintaining legacy systems
What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)
- You ship features that measurably improve conversion, retention, or app stability
- Firebase and Supabase integrations are clean, performant, and well-documented
- The App Store release process is predictable and friction-free
- You've identified and fixed technical bottlenecks that were slowing down the team
